Ask CDC about vaccinating pregnant ‘people’, preemies and newborns today vs 20 years ago” in response to a CBS News X post about the CDC report. Two of these causes of infant death, maternal complications and bacterial sepsis, showed statistically significant (greater than would be expected by chance) increases of 2.6 infant deaths per 100,000 live births and 2.1 infant deaths per 100,000 live births respectively. Overall, infant mortality was 5.60 per 100,000 in 2022, compared with 5.44 per 100,000 in 2021, a 3% rise. The Supreme Court has a major impact on everyday Americans' lives. The thing is, the ramifications of what a Supreme Court can do are vastly more important than the feelings of a couple of justices. There is a 6-3 split on the court, with the justices appointed by GOP presidents enjoying a rather substantial lead. Democrats probably need to think about what an acceptable level of risk is for losing control of the Supreme Court for generations. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg decided against retiring during President Obama's term despite a desire from the president to ensure her replacement reflected her liberal values.

"The end of the public health emergency means CDC will have less authority to collect certain types of public health data — that means less data will be available to us," Dr. Nirav Shah, the CDC's principal deputy director, told reporters during a call Thursday. Congress required these labs in March 2020 to send results to the federal government, but that mandate was tied to the public health emergency. "In some of the jurisdictions or some of the states those authorities will go away with the end of public health emergency," he said. The spotty reporting of case data also means the CDC will no longer report virus transmission at the county level after the public health emergency ends. Shah said the CDC will still have ways to monitor Covid after the public health emergency ends.
High-functioning depression is a colloquial term and not a technical clinical diagnosis, explains Rheeda Walker, Ph.D., psychologist and leading researcher on suicide in the Black community. Persistent depressive disorder is another official diagnosis that, for some patients, may include high-functioning depression, Walker says. But she also stresses that because high-functioning depression is not a technical diagnosis, she’s hesitant to say they’re the same. But a 2021 study indicates the Black suicide rate is likely higher than documented because the manner of death is often misclassified. If you’re concerned about a loved one attempting suicide, Walker notes that anxiety is “as strong a predictor” as depression.
REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File PhotoDec 7 (Reuters) - Reduced access to infertility treatments early in the pandemic may have contributed to a drop in twin births, data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggest. Overall, twin births did not rise significantly in 2021 from 2020 levels, although rates began to increase near the end of the year. The largest decline in twin births was seen in women over age 40, the group most likely to use infertility treatment. The smallest decline was in women under age 30, who are least likely to use infertility treatment, the authors said. The study cannot prove pandemic lockdowns caused twin births to decline.

In 2020, more than 5,000 adults 65 and older in the United States died of a drug overdose. Though drug overdose death rates for older adults tend to be lower than for other age groups – and made up just 0.2% of total deaths among adults 65 and older in 2020 – such deaths have been climbing. Between 2000 and 2020, the rates rose from 2.4 to 8.8 deaths per 100,000 people among adults 65 and older. Between 2000 and 2020, drug overdose deaths increased more among men than women, rising from 2.7 to 12.3 deaths per 100,000 men compared with 2.3 to 5.8 per 100,000 women. “Because of ageism, we typically do not think of older adults as having a substance use disorder nor do we think of older adults for being at-risk for a drug overdose.

Allegations that voter registration applications sent to deceased voters in Texas equate to or would lead to voter fraud are circulating on social media ahead of the U.S. midterms. The Texas Secretary of State stressed that there are multiple safeguards in place against voter impersonation. If someone received an application addressed to a deceased voter, to actually commit voter fraud, they would still need to: complete the application, request a mail-in ballot and ultimately, cast that ballot. “It would seem unlikely, but not impossible to acquire these pieces of information and then receive, complete and return a mail ballot for the deceased voter. The use of non-official datasets containing outdated information could result in some mailers being sent to deceased voters.
CNN —Drug overdose deaths in the United States increased sharply throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, reaching record levels in 2021. But by 2021, rates among Black men had surpassed those of American Indian men. In 2021, overdose death rates among Black men ages 35 to 64 were higher than any other demographic group. Drug overdose deaths continue to rise, with the CDC’s latest provisional data showing that more than 109,000 people died of a drug overdose in the 12-month period ending March 2022. Relative to state population, rates of overdose deaths were by far the highest in West Virginia, with 83 overdose deaths for every 100,000 residents.
